Which plastics are safe?

Plastic is everywhere around us, from our food containers all the way to our phones. And while it may seem easy for us to to dismiss the fears surrounding the miracle material, it’s only because we haven’t truly understood the implications of such dangers that we continually ignore for our bodies.

Once upon a time, smoking was considered healthy, and recommended by doctors to clear the sinuses. It was only decades later was the tobacco lobby found guilty of misleading consumers, after thousands of people have died. Starting to sound familiar?

Plastic is so integrated with society, even the air we breath is filled with micro-plastics. Already, researchers are warning households on the dangers of plastics at home, such as BPA and Pthalates. To figure out whats safe, we must fist establish whats unsafe for us. I found the above chart from the book Green Remodelling, showing whats safe or not.

Keep in mind the expiry date for a plastic water bottle is the expiry for the plastic packaging, that all of these chemicals are leeching into the water, poisoning us slowly over time. Even if it is classified as safe plastic, we can never be too sure, and only remain vigilant about the materials our products are made from.
